All About THE VLN (The Virtual Learning Network)

What is it ?
The VLN is a social learning community where teachers, learners, school leaders and facilitators connect, join virtual programmes/projects, share experiences, and develop new ways to support learning through ICTs.
As a cluster we are required to upload reflective summaries (MIlestone Reporting) and continue to share resources (sustainablilty opportunity).
By submitting these reflective summaries to the VLN, clusters open a window on their work, for the benefit of all. How you present this, to help make it accessible and usable is invaluable.
Extra information and Cluster examples can also be found at Centre 4 (you will need your L@S / Centre 4 username and password).

Unpacking the process for uploading your reflective summaries to the VLN . Considerations like:

  • The appropriate length for an online reflective summary - with an audience in mind. For example, Could a complete stranger understand what you’ve done, what you were trying to achieve and they how they could benefit from it
  • The reflection must be uploaded as a group resource. Other pages, files tools etc do not have the one control Subject titled, 'reflective summary'. This control subject will allow the material to be searchable between TKI and the VLN.
  • When you upload your resource, you will need to add your own tags in the Tags field. You can also take advantage of the auto-complete (tags that already exist). It is VITAL TO TAG, so that the material can be searchable in the VLN (http://www.vln.school.nz/).
  • Suggested tags may include:
    • school type
    • cluster type/name
    • focus of one of the ICT PD cluster goals
    • specific aspects of the curriculum (learning areas, KCs, Inquiry, pedagogy)
    • year level
    • gender
    • culture, ethnicity
  • You will need to select under resource Subject the control term 'reflective summary'.
  • You may also like to set the privileges to your group only - just while you are in the initial editing stages of peer review with your national facilitator. Once this is all set to go, you can reset this to Public.

Issues to watch out for:
  • Uploading as a page, file etc rather than a resource
  • Uploading as personal file rather than a group resource
  • No tags entered or resource subject selected

Searching for the good oil:
• Go to your own profile in the VLN (http://www.vln.school.nz/), Go>Tools>Resources>All site resources. Here you will see a Tag cloud developing.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. All other support (as well as instructional videos) can be found @ http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/groupcms/view/44787/
