Using Youtube as a Resource - Lyn @ Kimihia Yr -1-2

As a junior team we've developed a file of really useful youtube clips . These are excellent resources and an effective way of supporting learning particularly in reading, maths and music at this level. The children love the short "Ad-like" length of clips, the sounds and graphic colours. Students happily sing, or read along and remember catchy phrases.
Music Ideas
We've collected a file of singalong songs which we use for junior syndicate singing - the video clips have great graphics and many have the words scrolling along the bottom.
Maths Ideas
I've found an extensive collection of maths videos to help reinforce a particular learning intention. I find they're perfect to use to reinforce learning at the beginning or end of a lesson.
Below is an example of a rap the children love, which we use to support learning around adding doubles in maths.


Literacy Ideas
There are plenty of great videos reinforcing phonics - you just need to be mindful of accents (we don't use American voices ;).
Below is an example of blends. All of my students have small flexible "whiteboards and whiteboard pens" which they bring to the mat. These are so useful when using video.
In this case students can record the blends or sounds they identify and can then reflect on what we know..



St Joes - Thinking Skills Development - Yr 3

My philosophy for all teaching is to develop children's critical thinking skills, across the curriculum. This happens naturally and easily in maths but some other areas need more encouragement. As a staff we've held much discussion around the need for thinking skills to support learning in our digital environments and I've found my year 3 children have been able to relate well to De Bono's Thinking Hats.

A particular example was a follow-up activity I used after our Triathlon. The children were reflecting on the success of the event and the possibilty of making changes for the next year's event. The children found it very easy to reflect since they'd had a "concrete example" to evaluate and they moved easily between the hats. This supported their learning in a way that ensured every ones opinion was valued and enabled them to come up with some carefully thought out and valid ideas. I can recommend using "the Hats" as I've now applied them effectively in a variety of situations, with this level. The children are comfortable with the structure and is has been a catalyst to encourage further, deeper thinking.

The follow up activity was to write a grammatically accurate sentence reflecting their opinions using each of the hats as "stems" to provoke their thinking and develop depth of thought when evaluating the event., then the children's work was organised under the separate "Hats" (in colours) and displayed in hoops, where we read and referred to thoughts and ideas to help plan the following year's event.

Whitikahu - NE - Y1 & 2 - Magnetism

We tend to plan "Topics/ Themes " as a whole school and then modify for individual levels and needs, integrating appropriate use of ICTs to support achievement objectives :)

In this case we have used ICTs to help assess student understanding of the concepts (support our OTJs) eg. photos,, recording interviews with students, using the webcam etc. With my NEs I have taken action learning photos and asked each child to explain an aspect of their developing understandng so I could record it in a table. i find this really useful as the students use it to read, recall and reflect on their learning.

I've been on a huge learning curve developing quality writing with my students and integrating ICT !
The quality writing we established in our junior school has been the result of much work with our "oral language".
We've developed rich resources to support this development eg. powerful adjective and verbs on velcro cards, large visual cues etc.
This quality scaffolding has resulted in a dramatic improvement inoutcomes for all our students, in particular I've noted improvements in
motivation, confidence and processes.Being able to upload student's work and present it instantly in a published format has added huge motivation to the students. They want to read and REREAD their work. This is regularly reinforcing the rich language development and consolidating all the learning without any fuss or effort. It is also adding to the home/school partnership as students can immediately share this learning at home. Because I'm aware of parents viewing this work I make a point of sharing the specific learning intentions behind the work. The feedback from parents confirms that this is effectively addressing a need. This is quality "sharing the learning at home". Below is an example of my first attempt at sharing the children's published writing in book form in Scribd - I embed these in our class Knowledgenet pages.

Junior share Room 2 and 3 @ Whitikahu School Sally and Briar

The junior team has been working hard to incorporate ICT into our classrooms this year.
For our science topic of feet, feather and beaks, we videoed the children’s learning as this showed the progression in their understanding from the beginning of the unit to the end. We also photographed the children engaged in their learning experiences. At the end of the unit, we put the videos into Windows Movie Maker to show the children and parents the learning throughout the topic. We also imported the photos into photostory and added captions which the children wrote. The children have recently been using paint to retell the story of Captain Black Custard, as told to the whole school by artist and storyteller Stu Duval. They have been using the webcam to record their reading behaviours, and having been using internet sites for reading and maths activities. The sites we have used are ones that have been shared at cluster days and as the coalface. We also accessed the internet, using the data projector, with the classes to topic-related sites during our science topic to further engage the children. Our current ICT focus is the children using cameras and learning to download these and use them in a variety programmes. Some of the children have furthered their learning by downloading photos into Comic Life. Senior children have also helped as peer support, working and sharing ideas with the junior children. Lots of learning happening for both teachers and children in the junior classes at Whitikahu SchoolJ

We put this on the wiki last Friday, however we found out (today) Monday about the new 2010 site and criteria, so we have moved it and will add to the 2010 site again soon.


Huntly Primary

We've been exploring powerpoint applications and making useful resources to support literacy development.
The first example is a simple chart used to promote word recognition. Students love to practice as a class (using the Data Projector) and to revisit the slideshow with a partner as a "choosing activity" (saved as a shortcut on the class desktops). Huntly Primary
This is a great idea! The students bought a collection of "things" from home and we sorted them into objects that started with the same letter sound. This can be used in many different ways. The student's took photos of their collection and posed questions to make "I Spy" books. It worked really well and the students are constantly re-reading their work.
